Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a shooting incident that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento while deputies were dissolving an unsanctioned gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
Before the Gunfire
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office initially got calls about the park on Howe Avenue around half past six in the evening after getting calls of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made mentioning a reported physical confrontation unfolding inside the park.
Aerial units flew over the park but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Even so, it became clear that an enormous crowd had gathered without authorization without official sanction.
When the Shots Rang Out
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by encircling the gathering and broadcasting over loudspeakers commanding those gathered to leave immediately. Approximately 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.
It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 gunshots were discharged. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Law enforcement swiftly started finding those who had been shot.
Four Gunshot Victims
Altogether, four victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. The four individuals — a group of one female and three male victims all reportedly in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or click here driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Emergency physicians confirmed that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one sustained moderate wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and helped triage those with gunshot wounds prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The bulk of the shooting was confirmed to have taken place adjacent to the Cottage Way side of the park near the local Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators found more spent casings scattered along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the wrought iron perimeter fencing bordering the Home Depot. This evidence showed that a shooter had been aiming south from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown as a precaution. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives remained on scene throughout the night.
Suspect Information
Details gathered over police scanner frequencies revealed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four detainees were taken into custody. Sacramento law enforcement were heading to pick up the four detainees to return them to Sacramento for formal questioning. Video that was reviewed established that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
